History

Northoaks was developed on the historical farm Groot Moddergat located in the Orangekloof Valley which dates back to 1821 when it served as a wine cellar and still boasts the original manor homestead-national monument. Hout Bay is the third oldest surviving formal settlement, Cape Town and Simonstown are its seniors.

The olive grove in close proximity to this home, it is over 100 years old, and adds to the ataraxy of the estate.

“Hout Bay” was named by The Dutch East India Company after they settled in South Africa in 1652 to create a supply point for their ships trading between Asia and Europe while the Dutch were looking for good sources of timber for the construction of their new colony at the feet of Table Mountain, they found the ideal Bay – Hout Bay.

The Bay was covered entirely by beautiful forests which became the perfect wood for the Dutch. It is how they started to settle in this area and named it ‘’Hout Baai’’ meaning ‘’Wood Bay’’ in English
